One of the rules new mori girls sometimes forget is the lack of body conscious clothes. Mori Girl silhouette is very loose. But that silhouette is very hard to create in the West where most of our clothing is tight fitting and forming so how can you accomplish this look? Here are some tips:
1. Layering
One of the easiest ways to get that frumpy look is to layer your clothing. But it can be troublesome sometimes with the clothing styles found over here.
Most western clothes and dresses are form fitting on the top of the dress so adding a cardigan or a blouse can help camouflage that. Another problem with western clothing are low cuts trying to show off more skin. Again layering helps to hide that as well.
example
The other elements take your eyes away from the dress. The oversize beige scarf helps create another silhouette while the dark brown shirt helps elevate the collar making the outfit a lot more modest and innocent.

scarves and fur really help as well! They don’t have to be big and bulky like this example shows.
2. Bigger sizes
This can be tricky to navigate. Buying a bigger size can sometimes create a less form fitting figure but at the same time it can simply look like the item is too big for you. Be careful when using this trick. For me personally I find this works best with shirts as the sleeve usually look bulkier where as it doesn’t work as well with skirts.
example
I’ll have to use myself as an example. This shirt I found at our Free Store and we were going to throw it away (it’s a homemade shirt) so i kept it. As you can see from the sleeves and the bottom of the shirt ending on my body it’s much too big but does help create the frumpy look. I usually only use one piece like this in one outfit. And I usually layer it on top of a dress.
3. Thrift Shopping
Unfortunately a lot of clothing today is very form fitting so shopping vintage and thrift is a great place to find different silhouettes.
I hope this helps be careful on your journey to the woods
I see a lot of us getting nervous when our bodies disappear under layers and throw a belt on, so I hope this helps! RESIST THE BELT! :D
corsets too, corsets have absolutely zero place in any version of mori girl as far as I’m concerned (I’ve seen this, believe it or not. rare, but I hope it stays rare). Bodices are different although they’re way more dolly kei to me. :3
