Artemisia Gentileschi, 1593-1656

Artemisia Gentileschi was the daughter of painter Orazio Gentileschi. Instead forcing her into domestic life, her father encouraged and nurtured his daughter’s artistic talent, allowing her to work in his studio. She later became one the most accomplished painters of her time and became the first woman to become a member of the prestigious Accademia di Arte del Disegno.

When she was 17, Artemisia was raped by her mentor and family friend Agostino Tassi. Her father pressed charges against Tassi which resulted in a seven month trial, during which Artemisia was subjected to torture in order to verify her testimony. Tassi was found guilty and was sentenced to jail time which he never served, and Artemisia was quickly married off to avoid the shame of lost chastity. The trauma from the rape and torture stayed with her for the rest of her life and is reflected in her paintings. This can be seen in her work Susanna and her Elders, where Artemisia portrays Susanna as bothered and harassed rather than sensual and seductive (as drawn by male painters).

She is also one of the most progressive painters of her generation. Rather than painting women with the stereotypical ‘feminine’ traits, like timidness and weakness, which was typical of male painters, Artemisia portrayed women as confident, rebellious, powerful, and equally competent as men. This reflected her struggle to gain respect as a female painter. As a woman, however, she was able to use actual nude female models for painting, giving her an advantage of better naturalism and anatomical accuracy over her male counterparts.   

When Artemisia Gentileschi died, her name fell into obscurity for a long time, with many of her paintings being misattributed to her father. She was ‘praised’ by 19th and early 20th century art critics as “the only woman in Italy who ever knew about painting.”
